Savoury Mince

An easy mince recipe that can be served on pasta, rice, noodles or turned into a shepherd's pie!

Savoury Mince

Method

  1. Place the mince in a saucepan and heat gently, stirring constantly so that it does not stick.  Keep stirring until the mince has browned.
  2. Add the onions and the mixed herbs; cook for a further 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add the tomatoes (including juice), tomato sauce, soy sauce, chopped kūmara, peas and just enough water to cover the mince.  Cover and simmer for 30 minutes.
  4. Mix the cornflour and the cold water to a paste.  
  5. Add to the mince, stirring until thick.  Serve on brown rice, wholemeal noodles or pasta.  Alternatively, top with mashed potato as shepherd's pie.

Shepherd's Pie

  • Use the savoury mince recipe.

  • Top with mashed potato (see Fish pie recipe)

  • Bake at 180ºC for 20-30 minutes until the filling is hot an the potato is golden brown.

You need

  • 500g lean minced beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tsp mixed herbs, dried
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes, 400g
  • 2 Tbsp tomato sauce
  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce (low salt)
  • 1 medium kūmara, peeled and chopped
  • 1/2 cup frozen green peas
  • water to cover mince
  • 1 Tbsp cornflour
  • 2 Tbsp cold water (to mix with cornflour)
