With after school sports practices, homework and parents often working late, its can be a struggle to get the whole family sitting down to dinner at once. But whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner, family meals provide an opportunity for family and whanau to not only role model and support healthy eating, but also enjoy quality time together and catch up on the day.
What can you do?
- Get your children involved in meal preparation. Older children could cook the whole meal while younger children can be help set the table.
- To get started aim to eat at least one night together a week, a family breakfast or lunch on the weekend is another option.
- Turn off distractions such as television, toys and phones.
- Practice role modelling, such as eating a range of foods on offer at meal times to provide a good example.
